DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL MICROBIOLOGY
The universal recognition of microbes in daily life and more so in agriculture, led to the establishment of the Department of Agricultural Microbiology in the Adhiyamaan College of Agriculture and Research, Athimugam in the year 2016. Gradually, the department has evolved with the mandate of achieving academic excellence and research in Agricultural Microbiology. The department is well equipped with Compound Microscopes, Stereo Zoom Microscopes, Phase Contrast Microscope, Autoclave, Laminar Air Flow Chamber, Incubator cum Shaker, Digital Colony Counter, Centrifuge, pH Meter, UV – Spectrophotometer, Microbial Fermenter and Refrigerator. Availing these laboratory facilities and expertise of the faculty, the student Project is being proposed every year and as a result, the novel microbial strains are identified and its potentials explored.
Further, the department gained its importance due to the threat exerted to the beneficial soil microbiota and soil health on application of chemical fertilizers. So, the exploitation of beneficial microbes as bioinoculants has become paramount importance in agriculture sector for their potential role in food safety and sustainable crop production. As an initiative, quality bioinoculants such as Rhizobium, Azospirillum, Azotobacter, Phosphobacteria and Azolla are produced in the laboratoryfor large scale supply to local farmers. The department continues to create human resource in Agricultural Microbiology since its inception and supporting the farmers through supply of low-cost agricultural inputs connected with organic farming and sustainable agriculture.
The objectives of the laboratory,
To impart scientific and technical knowledge in all domains of Microbiology
Documentation of microbial diversity
Development of multifunctional bio-inoculant strains for enhanced plant nutrition and soil health
Training and Advisory Services to farmers on the usage of biofertilizers
