Plant Breeding and Genetics

              Since the dawn of civilization, man has tamed the wild to meet his ends; not just animals but plants as well. And practically that was the point of time from where the practice of breeding started.

             Plant Breeding provides the seeds of new high-yielding cultivars, which often include other desired traits that increase farming profitability and sustainability. Genetics made plant breeding a science-based approach for crop improvement that continues evolving due to increasing knowledge. Conventional cross breeding methods are now used along with tools ensuing from advances in omics and genetic engineering. Genome sequences are available for many plant species, and DNA markers are being used as aids in Plant Breeding.

            The Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics was started in Adhiyamaan College of Agriculture and Research, Hosur in 2016. The college is affiliated to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore with triple mandates of Education, Research and Extension.
They have contributing immensely to the local farming community in and around Krishnagiri district. The Department has equipped laboratory / field labs with adequate equipment’s to carry out both fundamental and applied research and provide options for undergraduate students to get adequate exposure in advanced molecular biological techniques.
